Your Solo Life Is Not a Waiting Room

You're not killing time until a partner shows up.

There's a subtle message threaded through so much of the content aimed at single women: that this chapter — the one where you're on your own — is the before picture. The prologue. The waiting room where you pass time until the real story starts. I reject that completely, and I hope you do too.

Your solo life isn't a gap to fill. It's not the "in-between." It's a full, legitimate, and valuable chapter of your life right now — not retroactively, not only if you eventually partner up, but right now, exactly as it is. The distinction between being "single" and being "solo" matters here. "Single" is defined by absence — you're not partnered. "Solo" is defined by presence — you are whole, self-directed, and living a life you designed. The framing changes everything.

This doesn't mean you have to love every minute of it. Some nights are lonely. Some weddings sting. Some Sunday mornings you wish there was someone across the table. Those feelings are real, and they don't contradict the truth that your life is already meaningful and complete. Holding both is the work: I can want partnership and refuse to defer my happiness until it arrives.

What would you do differently if you truly believed this chapter counted? Would you take the trip? Buy the good sheets? Paint the walls the color you actually want? Learn to cook the dish you love, even if it's just for you? Stop saving experiences for a future version of your life that may or may not look the way you imagine? These aren't small questions — they're the difference between living and waiting.

Building a life you love now isn't a consolation prize. It's not settling. It's the foundation that makes everything else — including a future relationship, if you want one — healthier and more grounded. The best partnerships I've seen are between two people who each had a life they loved before they met. They didn't merge out of need; they expanded out of want.

So here's your permission, in case you've been waiting for it: this chapter counts. Decorate it. Fill it. Live it. Not as a placeholder, but as the main event it already is.
